The Government has announced that the adult rate of the National Minimum Wage will increase in October this year – however, the two rates specifically aimed at younger workers will remain unchanged.

From 1st October 2012, the minimum rates will be as follows:
· The adult rate (age 21 and over) will increase by 11p to £6.19 an hour;

· The rate for 18 - 20 year olds will not change - remaining at £4.98 an hour;

· The rate for 16 - 17 year olds will not change - remaining at £3.68 an hour; and

· The rate for apprentices will increase by 5p to £2.65 an hour.

The maximum accommodation offset will increase by 9p to £4.82 per day.

 PERSONAL ASSISTANT EMPLOYERS

More and more people are becoming concerned of the increasing possibility that the support packages they have is being cut because of a re-assessment of their care needs!

Indeed we have heard of one or two cases where this is happening, within a short timeframe. So be prepared.

Perhaps it is worth reminding you as a PA Employer.

If you find yourself in the situation where hours are being cut from your support package - after a re-assessment - where the outcome has your agreement - and you have to cut Personal Assistants’ working hours. If this happens a suitable time scale is needed for you to talk with your employees, about the changes that may affect their working conditions.  So don’t be rushed. You need time to apply your responsibilities as an Employer.

Social Care (Self-Directed Support)(Scotland) Bill call for written views: On Thursday 1 March 2012, the Scottish Parliament’s Health and Sport Committee opened a call for written views from all interested parties on the general principles of the Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland) Bill.The Bill makes legislative provisions relating to the arranging of care and support in order to provide a range of choices to individuals as to how they are to be provided with their support.  For further information on the Bill and its accompanying documents, please see the Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland) Bill
