Consultation on the Right to Control

On the 11th June 2009, the Office of Disability Studies (ODI) launched its consultation on the Right to Control.  Right to Control embodies the principles of independence and freedom of choice set out in the UN convention.  According to ODI research, disabled people do not have the sort of choice and control over their lives that non-disabled people take for granted.

Under this new policy, disabled people will be able to choose who delivers their services and how they can receive them.  They can have as much or as little control as they wish and they could choose to spend the money on a wide range of support to help them to live their lives with greater independence and freedom.

Disabled people should get involved with the consultation process so they can influence how Right to Control works. ODI particularly wants to support disabled people's organisations to run their own consultation events.

ODI would also like to encourage responses from public bodies, commissioners and service providers.
