Coaching and Development Programme
Introduction
SPAEN’s remit is to develop a more strategic approach to support PA employers across Scotland. As a result of the evidence we have collated from our members, other PA employers and from the telephone calls received at the SPAEN office, we have produced a coaching and development programme. In most instances, the employment issues where problems developed were founded more specifically within the employer/employee relationship rather than with employment law itself. By Supporting PA employers to develop their role as managers through our Coaching and Development Programme (CDP) for PA Employers; we feel is the foundation of a successful independent living package.
The transition from a person being the passive recipient of community care services to someone employing and managing their own staff requires a different form of support. The evidence we have has highlighted that indeed the majority of employment problems were not employment law related in the main, but more in the relationship and communication between the PA Employer and the Personal Assistant.
The aims of SPAEN’s CDP are to enable the PA employer to deal effectively and confidently with employment and personnel issues. The programme provides the foundation of supporting the PA employer to take on confidently the weightier issues of employment law and employer responsibilities. The overall aim is to ensure a compliant and informative working relationship between PA employer and the Personal Assistant, encouraging a relationship based on confidence, affection, respect and trust.
The Coaching and Development Programme (CDP)
The CDP has been designed by SPAEN to support people employing their own Personal Assistants and has a variety of modules. The modules are flexible and could be used singularly for individual sessions where appropriate . However participation in the full suggested CDP is recommended.
The CDP aims to assist PA employers to fulfil their role as skilled employers. The CDP will support PA employers to exhibit a competent level of personal development, communication, good judgement and critical thinking in terms of problem solving in relation to their personnel and statutory responsibilities as employers.
METHOD
The modules endeavour to release the anxiety and worry surrounding the employer role by looking in depth at the responsibilities involved in being a proficient and competent employer. In addition to this we will provide a safe environment to practice dealing with everyday employment and personnel scenarios.
The modules invite self reflection on past experiences with a view to establishing any reoccurring problems. Personal Development is encouraged by being invited to see things from differing perceptual positions. We look at our communication styles and our thinking distortions regarding our own situations. We look at problem solving in order that we can be coherent and factual in our assessment of any personnel issues in relation to our statutory obligations as employers.
From a practical sense the modules incorporate the Advice and Indemnity scheme and SPAEN paperwork i.e. stationery pack, contracts and handbook.
Each of the sections can be taken as individual modules. If participants wish they can choose a specific area or a particular module which would suit their personal circumstances then these can be supplemented into the programme.
The Basic Programme incorporates
The Role of the PA and Carer
Listening Skill
Communication Skills
Preparing for recruitment
Advertising Vacancies
Interviewing Skills
Discrimination and Employee Induction
Employment Law – rights and responsibilities
People Management
The additional modules include:
