Key changes to Employment legislation in April 2012

In response to a consultation on resolving workplace disputes the Government will bring in a number of changes to employment legislation next month, including the following:

  • An increase in the qualifying period for unfair dismissal from one year to two years. This will only affect employees who start their employment after 6 April 2012. The intention is to help employers feel more confident  about hiring people.
Updated rates of statutory benefits will also apply from early April 2012
  • The standard rates for statutory maternity pay, statutory paternity pay and statutory adoption pay will increase from £128.73 to £135.45. The weekly earnings threshold for these payments will also increase from £102 to £107
  • Statutory sick pay will rise from £81.60 to £85.85, with the weekly earnings threshold also increasing from £102 to £107
  • Maternity allowance will increase from £124.88 to £135.45 with earnings threshold remaining at £30.
