Experiences wanted! Experiences of young adults affected by parental substance abuse

Sharon Greenwood is a PHD researcher at the University of Glasgow. Her research hopes to help develop a greater understanding of the lives of young adults aged 16 to 25 years old, living in scotland, who have been affected by a parent or guardian’s drug and/or alcohol use. Sharon hopes this research will help both the Government and third sector organisations to refine their service provision for this group of young people.

Sharon is carrying out interviews with 20 young adults living all over Scotland. The interviews are very informal, and focus on life experience so far. There is a visual component to the research, this is something to be discussed in a follow up interview.

Participants would be interviewed twice, once this year and once in early Spring 2016. The interviews should not take longer than two hours in total, and participants can reveal as much or as little as they wish. Incentives cannot be offered due to restricted research costs, but Sharon will travel to a suitable place to interview you, and will provide tea, coffee, and cake!

Sharon is lookign to speak to young people who:

– Are aged between 16 and 25 years old

– Currently living in Scotland

– Have been affected in some way by a parent or guardian’s substance abuse [this is a  very wide definition, and includes physical and emotional harm, restrictions on opportunities in employment or education, having to adopt caring responsibilities for the parent or other family members [e.g siblings, grandparents]]

Learning Disabilities Health Survey

Learning Disability Alliance Scotland are carrying out a survey in the experience of people with learning disabilites when they use health services.

People with learning disabilities die earlier than almost every other part of the population and generally enjoy poor health.   We are asking people with learning disabilities, their families and paid staff to tell us what their experience with health services has been and what can make it better. We want to find out what lies behind the numbers.

Whether you have a learning disability, care for someone with a learning disability or work with people with learning disabilities, you can fill in our a short questionnaire, tell us your story, come to meetings to talk to other people about these and share ways of making things better.   You can take part at www.tinyurl.com/LDASsurvey

Scotland’s Employer Recruitment Incentive

Scotland’s Employer Recruitment Incentive is aimed at helping unemployed young people who are facing significan challenges. The aim is to encourage employers to recruit young people aged 16-24 years old [or up to 29 years old for young people with Additional support Needs] into sustainable employment, including Modern Apprenticeships.

Employers can receive a maximum grant of £4,463 whn employing a young person for a minimum of one year!

The incentive will be available to use as a contribution to the additional costs of recruiting and sustaining a young person in employment for up to 52 weeks.

So if you are a young person aged between 16 and 24 years old, or up to 29 years old if you have Additional Support Needs, currently unemployed and looking for long term employment opportunities.

Santa visits Home Start

Home Start is a local charity providing help to families around the city. They are organizing a meet and greet with Santa at their George Street charity shop!

Come meet Santa from 11am to 2pm on:

  • Mondays: 7th, 14th, 21st
  • Tuesdays: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd
  • Wednesdays: 3rd, 10th, 17th
  • Fridays: 4th, 11th, 18th
  • Saturdays: 5th, 12th, 19th

Cost: £5 per child [Santa’s gifts are suitable for children up to age 10]

Older people Christmas presents appeal

The Wellbeing team are looking for small gifts which they will give to people aged over 65 years old who are frail, lonely and isolated.

This is so they have Christmas gifts like verybody else.

Please provide new gifts, unwrapped, such as confectionary, biscuits, non perishable goods, items suitable for both genders.

All you have to do is drop them off no later than on december 14th at either:

Reception, Marischal College on Broad Street, marked for the attention of Julie Somers.

Reception at Aberdeen Health Village on Frederick Street, marked for the attention of Beverley Johnson.

The gifts will be then wrapped up and handed out at the 65+ Festive Lunch on December 17th.
